The Bastard of Aegon IV
Brynden Rivers was born during the reign of King Aegon IV Targaryen, a ruler infamous for corruption and excess. Like many of Aegon’s children, Brynden was born outside of marriage and was therefore considered a bastard.
His mother was Melissa Blackwood, a woman from the powerful House Blackwood of the Riverlands.
Brynden inherited the distinctive Valyrian appearance of the Targaryens, including pale skin and striking features, but he also had a unique and unsettling trait. One of his eyes was red, which many believed gave him an eerie and almost supernatural appearance.
A red birthmark across his cheek resembling a raven’s wing eventually earned him the nickname Bloodraven.
Shortly before his death, Aegon IV made a fateful decision that changed the political future of the realm. He legitimized all of his bastards, including Brynden Rivers and the future rebel Daemon Blackfyre. This single act would ignite one of the most destructive civil wars in Westeros history.
Bloodraven and the Blackfyre Rebellion
During the First Blackfyre Rebellion, Brynden Rivers remained fiercely loyal to the Iron Throne and supported the rightful king, Daeron II Targaryen. The rebellion reached its decisive moment during the legendary Battle of the Redgrass Field.
There, Bloodraven commanded a group of elite archers known as the Raven’s Teeth. His archers played a critical role in the battle by killing Daemon Blackfyre and two of his sons during the fighting.
With the rebel leader dead, the rebellion collapsed. Although Bloodraven’s actions secured victory for the crown, they also made him deeply hated among supporters of the Blackfyre cause.
To them, he became a symbol of ruthless power and political manipulation.
Master of Whisperers and Hand of the King
After the rebellion, Brynden Rivers rose to enormous influence within the royal court. He eventually became Master of Whisperers, the king’s spymaster, building one of the most extensive intelligence networks Westeros had ever seen.
Rumors spread that Bloodraven had spies everywhere. Some even believed he possessed magical abilities that allowed him to see events happening across the realm. His influence grew further when he later served as Hand of the King during the reign of King Aerys I Targaryen.
Bloodraven ruled with a cold and calculating style, focusing on stability and suppressing threats to the crown, especially those connected to the surviving members of the Blackfyre family.
Bloodraven in the Dunk and Egg Era
The events of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms take place during the period when Bloodraven was still a powerful figure in the Seven Kingdoms.
By this time he had become one of the most feared and respected men in Westeros. His network of spies allowed him to monitor potential rebellions and political threats across the realm.
His presence is strongly felt during The Mystery Knight, the third Dunk and Egg novella.
In that story, Bloodraven personally intervenes to stop another Blackfyre conspiracy, demonstrating just how closely he monitored the realm for signs of rebellion. Even when he is not physically present, characters frequently speak of him with a mixture of fear and respect.
Exile to the Night’s Watch
Despite his long service to the crown, Bloodraven eventually fell from power.
When Aegon V Targaryen, the former squire Egg, became king, he faced a difficult political situation involving a captured Blackfyre pretender. Bloodraven chose to execute the prisoner without trial, believing it was the safest decision for the realm.
However, this act angered many nobles who believed the execution had violated the laws of the kingdom. As punishment, Bloodraven was stripped of his titles and sent to serve in the Night’s Watch.
The Last Journey Beyond the Wall
Brynden Rivers eventually became Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch, but his story did not end there.
During a ranging beyond the Wall, he disappeared and was believed to have been lost in the wilderness. Years later, it was revealed that Bloodraven had become the mysterious Three Eyed Raven, a powerful greenseer living deep in the forests beyond the Wall.
This transformation connected his story directly to the events of Game of Thrones, where he becomes the mentor of Bran Stark.
One of the Most Mysterious Figures in Westeros
